CALL FOR ENTRIES

In celebration of World Industrial Design Day on 29 June 2010, we invite industrial designers from South Australia to participate in ‘Hung out to dry’. This event intends to raise the overall awareness of industrial design through the understanding of our discipline.

To demonstrate how industrial designers can solve social and environmental issues, local industrial designers and industrial design firms have been invited to design coat hangers made from recycled material.

We are asking aspiring South Australian industrial designers to be part of this show. A small number of allocated positions have been made available for the right candidates; this creates a unique opportunity to be able to have your work displayed alongside well known designers.

Designing a resilient world.

In case you didn't know, it's World Industrial Design Day on 29th June.

To celebrate it, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) is calling on industrial designers worldwide to highlight how their work can help humanity prevent or respond to natural or man-made disasters.

This year's them is 'Industrial Design: Humane solutions for a resilient world.'

Icsid President Dr. Mark Breitenberg, said that there were 'expanded opportunities' for industrial designers in current society.

'Our field is growing from its historical role in the design of objects to the design of social systems and solving social and humanitarian problems through design,' he claimed.

'World Industrial Design Day gives designers an international platform to address these problems and shines a light on the sometimes antiquated perception of what industrial designers do.'

The initial World Industrial Design Day invited renowned German designer Uwe Loesch to create a poster for the event (lower image), which in turn inspired the successful introduction of the first student poster competition (top image), organised by Icsid in 2009.

This year's student poster design can be voted for online from the 11th to the 27th May, with the winning poster promoted internationally and distributed via the network of Icsid Members for use during their events.

Bowerbird Bazaar - Adelaide's Design Market

Anthony Caggiano has kindly pointed out that the Bowerbird Bazaar Design Markets are on this weekend 26, 27 and 28 March and also on 8, 9 and 10 October 2010 at Queen’s Theatre, Adelaide. SixthSense

What an amazing era to be living in. The funny thing is our children, and their children,

probably wont even see this as a process of integration between technology and reality.

It's just how things will be... they will be born into this completely seamless and

integrated way of life. I feel old already.

Pranav Mistry is the inventor of SixthSense, a wearable device that enables new interactions between the real world and the world of data. Check out this Ted Talk.

Some previous projects from Mistry's work at MIT includes intelligent sticky notes, Quickies, that can be searched and can send reminders; a pen that draws in 3D; and TaPuMa, a tangible public map that can act as Google of physical world. His research interests also include Gestural and Tangible Interaction, Ubiquitous Computing, AI, Machine Vision, Collective Intelligence and Robotics.

Domestic and Small Commercial Wind Turbines from Phillipe Starck

From Good Is Website, "Phillipe Starck, the French designer famous for chic hotel interiors, strange watches, and minimalist furniture, has designed a range of small vertical-axis wind turbines for homes and businesses."

From Reuters, "The turbines, which will be made in the Tuscan city of Siena and can be placed in the garden or on the roof, consist of the quadrangular 400W WT model with a power output of 400W and the helicoidal shaped 1KW WT, which can generate power of 1 KW. Their Italian reference prices will start from about 2,500 euros ($3,515) and 3,500 euros respectively."

Call for Entries, I.D. 2010 Annual Design Review

I.D. Magazine is calling for entries for their 2010 Annual Design Review. 

"Since 1954, the Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic, and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure. Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on our material and visual culture. Each year, the featured work is chosen by a jury of leading practitioners, who, along with I.D.'s editorial team, focus the abundance of submissions into a clear survey of the state of design. The resulting overview is published in the July/August issue of I.D. magazine — the Annual Design Review issue." See the full story and competition details here. 

This is not a free entry competition and, "All entries must be postmarked or submitted online no later than December 1, 2009. Entries postmarked or submitted online after December 1 require a late fee of $25 per entry ($15 for students). Entries postmarked after December 15, 2009 will not be accepted."

Patents Gone Wild

Some ideas are best kept a secret, not always to protect their integrity but sometimes to protect the integrity of the inventor. 

I happened to stumble across the "Totally Absurd" website (http://totallyabsurd.com/archive.htm) that has an archive of ridiculous Patents that have actually been lodged and paid for by inventors (hopefully not industrial designers) in the US.

This picture above is one of many - entitled "Doggie Umbrella". Have a laugh going through some of them - it might just make you realise that that crazy idea of yours isn't that crazy after all.
